A facelift is used to correct sagging facial skin and is generally performed on men or women over the age of 40. It even helps in removing the creases near nose or eyelids.
The facelift is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure can take 3-4 hours. Depending on the assessment of the surgeon and the amount of the laxity of the skin, generally an incision will be made along your hairline, near the front of ears and can extend into the hairline behind ears. After this, the surgeon will separate the skin from underlying tissue, relocate excess fat and tighten the facial muscles using different techniques.
The skin is then lifted and stitched into place with the original incision. The face is dressed with a head bandage and a drain is placed behind the ear. It is taken out 2 days post surgery.
The recovery time after the surgery ranges between 10-14 days. During this period it is normal to have a tight sensation around the face and neck area. The skin may also feel tender and can appear swollen. Exposure to the sun should be limited for several months after the recovery period, and patients must use sunscreen.
