Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting and fat filling, is used to treat wrinkles and creases on the face which appear when elastin and hyaluronic acid (essential elements that give skin its natural elasticity) get broken down or worn out.
For patients who require lots of volume, it is more convenient to do a fat transfer as opposed to regular fillers. However, fat transfer requires downtime and is more invasive.
In 40% of cases, it is generally required to undergo a second fat transfer operation. However, in some cases, fillers may be opted for after the initial fat transfer.
During the treatment process, the surgeon will anesthetize the area from which the fat will be taken and the area to which it will be transferred.
Using a small needle, some amount of fat is removed from your lateral thigh, flank (love handles) or abdomen area, as the fat on these areas is tighter.
This extracted fat is then processed in order to remove extra fluids, after which it is reinjected into the targeted area. The process is repeated until desired results are obtained.
The surgery will depend upon the area being treated and the best process will be discussed with your surgeon during the initial consultation.
